We have just received word that the first key vote on permitting homosexuals to openly serve in the military will likely happen around 5:00 p.m. tonight in the U.S. Senate!

According to the Pentagon's own report issued last week to Congress, 67 percent of Marines and nearly 58 percent of Army soldiers in combat units say that repeal of the "Don't Ask Don't Tell" ("DADT") policy would have negative consequences on unit cohesion in the field or at sea.

In the face of this opposition, the Obama Administration and the lame duck Congress want to prioritize political correctness over the combat readiness and unit cohesion of our troops! Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid confirmed his plan to repeal DADT, which prohibits homosexuals from openly serving in the military during this lame duck session. The ACLU is gloating, "We can win this," but that is not true if you take action now!

Contact your senators to express your support for keeping our military focused and strong. Our military defends us. We must stand with them!

Today I attended the meeting of the State Central Committee. The committee was considering a constitutional amendment from Clair Ellis that would essentially give the State Central Committee veto power over the vote of 2/3 of the delegates at convention on constitutional amendments. It seemed astounding to me that the party elite (and make no mistake, the state central committee is made up mostly of consummate party-insiders) would be so bold as to put their stamp on yet another attempt to grab power from the state delegates.

Arguments for the amendment focused around the notion that delegates are more transitory than SCC members (the SCC being composed mostly of long-time party insiders, this is certainly true), and that conventions, as demonstrated by the most recent nominating convention, and the conservative resurgence, can be more "emotional". The clear implication was that delegates are too uninformed and/or disinterested to make and wise and proper decisions.

Opponents of the measure (Lisa Shepherd, Lowell Nelson and Arnold Gaunt) spoke well to the fact that we should trust in the duly elected delegates to make a responsible decision in these matters. They argued that the SCC should not presume to know better than a 2/3 super-majority of the delegates. It was telling that the SCC voted down Lisa Shepherd's request for a roll-call vote. Apparently, most of the SCC did not want to go on record with their vote against the delegates.

In Lowell's speech, he challenged proponents of the measure to cite examples of when the delegates had acted irresponsibly in passing an amendment without the SCC's support. One proponent cited, as such an example, the fact that the delegates passed an amendment making Robert's Rules part of the official rules of the party. The SCC did not support that amendment. It is interesting that, Robert's, the definitive work on parliamentary procedure for organizations just like ours--refined over more than a hundred years with the purpose of ensuring efficiency and fairness--would be rejected by the SCC, but overwhelmingly supported by the delegates. And THAT is the example given by the party ruling-class as to why the SCC should effectively have veto power over the delegates.

Where does this leave us? I believe that just as Congress (and the White House) were desperately in need of a "house-cleaning", the same could be said of our insider-laden Utah Republican Party structure.

All state delegates need to plan to attend the June 11th Organizing Convention, and not only vote down this power-grab amendment (it only needs a simple majority to pass, now that it has 2/3 SCC approval), but also to replace the party leadership with a new batch of leaders that are focused on promoting the principles of the party platform, rather than the preservation of power among the party insiders.

Proposed Constitution and Bylaws Amendment
Constitution Article X.

B. Amendments. The Constitution may be amended by a 2/3 vote of the members at a State Central Committee meeting if subsequently ratified by a majority vote of the Delegates present at the State Convention. The Constitution may also be amended by 2/3 vote of Delegates present at the State Convention if subsequently ratified by a majority vote of the State Central Committee.

Rationale - Changes to the foundational Party Constitution should not be made in haste, or on their first reading, or without the opportunity for considerable deliberation, debate and perfecting amendments. Constitutional changes made by the SCC are already subject to further review and ratification by a state convention. This amendment provides that same check and deliberation by the SCC for changes adopted by a state convention, which are always done on first reading and with limited opportunity for debate and amendment. This amendment will ensure that all changes have the benefit of unified action and approval by the state convention and the SCC.

In Case You Missed It: A Black Farmer Blows the Whistle on the Black Farmer Settlement

I have 200 acres in Arkansas and have raised hogs.

Pigford is the biggest rip-off this country has ever known, and there are lots of people in positions of power that know it. Politicians are using it to buy votes. Trial lawyers are using it to get rich.

I personally know of people who have no connection to farming at all who got Pigford checks. People with potted plants in their apartments claimed to be farmers and got paid. I saw an instance where eight Pigford checks went to one house. There are drug addicts and pushers who have received payments who have never farmed a day in their life.

There was discrimination at the US Department of Agriculture. It needed to be dealt with. I was suing the USDA before Timothy Pigford even filed suit. I wrote to attorney Al Pires, who eventually filed a class action lawsuit against the USDA, but he saw that there wasn't going to be a huge amount of money for him. So he passed. What he did find was a way to work a scam from inside the Star City, Arkansas USDA office by paying a USDA employee to process claimants. This employee would take from $5,000 to $25,000 for each successful Pigford claim. Pires was in this totally for the money. He's made far more money than any black farmer.

John Boyd heads up the National Black Farmers Association and his business isn't straight. He worked with James Myart and Tom Burrell. Boyd has his agenda and it's making money. He has 70,000 members now. He wants people that file Pigford claims to join his group and pay $100 in dues every year. And when he holds meetings about Pigford and gives updates he sometimes asks for another $100 per person for the updates. Some of these meetings include hundreds of people so he does okay, if you know what I mean.

I saw the fraud coming. Whenever you put money out there, people are going to take advantage. I told John Boyd about this and he told me I wasn't being a team player. John Boyd, Tom Burrell, and James Myart know about the massive fraud. I don't know what team they are on, but I'm not going to be on any team that ignores widespread fraud.

Congress needs to investigate Pigford immediately. I believe that probably 80 to 90% of Pigford claims are fraudulent. I know that its at least 300 cases in Arkansas alone. By investigating this fraud we are opening up a can of worms. But it needs to be done. Justice demands it.

In Case You Missed It: The Next Chairman of the RNC

Michael Steele is about to be dumped as chairman of the Republican National Committee, but his successor is not likely to be any better.

Why?

Because the same business-as-usual forces responsible for selecting Steele are lining up to pick the new face of the RNC.

How does that work?

Look who is sponsoring the first debate between those eager to replace Steele - FreedomWorks and the Conservative Steering Committee.

FreedomWorks is the organization run by Dick Armey, the self-positioned leader of the tea-party movement who insists that movement avoid any discussion or promotion of so-called "social issues" as part of its agenda. Only economic issues are appropriate for the tea-party movement, says the organization that is well-funded by libertarian interests. So narrow is Armey's definition of "economic issues" it does not include illegal immigration, which he considers to be a divisive issue. What he really means is that tea-party activists want to deal with the open border, while he prefers amnesty for the lawbreakers.

Don't miss Joseph Farah's newest book, "The Tea Party Manifesto: A Vision of American Rebirth," in which he sets out a clear agenda for the movement he predicted would arise in response to Barack Obama.

Meanwhile, the Conservative Steering Committee is headed by James Bopp, a strong proponent of Mitt Romney for president. Nominating Mitt Romney as the Republican candidate for president in 2012 will ensure that Barack Obama's policies as president will never be reversed. Even worse, Romney's history as governor of Massachusetts strongly suggests he will take the Republican Party in a direction that will make it indistinguishable for most Americans from the Democratic Party. As I have written in the past, Romney may well be the most dangerous man in America, because, if he becomes the next president, he will most assuredly enshrine most of the Obama agenda as a permanent legacy for the country.

But, as far as the selection of the next RNC chairman, it only gets worse from here.

After Bopp and Armey put their stamp of approval on the next RNC leader, it will be Grover Norquist's turn in January. His Americans for Tax Reform will hold another debate between the candidates for the position. Norquist sits on the board of GOProud, the Republican homosexual activist group that promotes same-sex marriage, hate-crimes laws and open homosexuality in the military. He is also, ironically, an ally of the Islamist agenda in the U.S.

In other words, it looks like the fix is in. The RNC is not likely to deviate from its propensity to support only establishment Republican candidates under its new leadership because those involved in selecting the next leader are the same forces that chose Steele. New face, same old RNC.

However, there is still time for right-thinking Republican activists to wake up and take action on a matter that will greatly impact the next election.

It's just this simple: Don't be led astray by Grover Norquist, Dick Armey and James Bopp. They all have their own narrow agendas. The next chairman of the RNC needs to be someone who:

understands the historic opportunity the tea-party movement represents for real change in this country and will embrace it for what it is, not just use it for the empowerment of the Republican Party;

understands the historic threat represented by Islamic jihadism

understands the absolute sanctity of marriage - how it is literally the bedrock of self-governance and the future of America;

understands why the Republican Party and the conservative movement must never embrace immorality in any form - including, but not limited to, the homosexual activist agenda

understands that Americans will not accept business as usual from the Republican Party and that if that's what they see, Republicans will lose the next election and be back in the political wilderness

understands that all issues are social issues and all issues are moral issues - including those we think of as economic

understands that America's problems transcend economics and that we cannot address those other issues by focusing only on materialistic issues

understands that the glue that holds our country together can be found in the Declaration of Independence, where it says: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness"

understands that the Constitution is the absolute law of the land and that we must adhere to it and defend it and never permit the federal government to exceed its limitations on power.

In Case You Missed It": That's mighty McCain of you, Mr. President

Although being a new media-based political figure is a good way for a relatively-unknown candidate to mobilize his base, it has its disadvantages. For one, the comments that new media-based candidates make tend to live on a little longer than one would hope. Furthermore, these candidates have a hard time changing positions on issues - even if doing so makes sense - without coming across as hypocritical.

This is the problem that President Obama faces with his proposed two-year freeze on federal employees' wages.

Just two years ago, during his presidential run, when John McCain (R-AZ) advocated a freeze on non-vital spending until the financial crisis was resolved, President Obama's response noted the need not to act with "a hatchet when a scalpel will do." Well, after mocking McCain's proposal to freeze federal employees' wages in 2008, the electorally-strung Democrats - led by the White House's recent admission that, perhaps, the Obama administration should have reached out more to Republicans (which would include the president's former 2008 rival) - seem to be subtly giving a "mea culpa."

Both the actual proposal - and the implied admission - are probably not enough. The proposal to freeze federal wages comes from a desperate White House that is rapidly running out of ideas and support, even from its allies. The move makes the administration look weak and uncertain.

Just two years ago, McCain was being criticized for the confusion his campaign created around the first presidential debate, which Senator McCain initially refused to attend, only to later acquiesce to participating - a move that reeked of caving in to the competition after trying to draw a line in the sand.

For President Obama, his line in the sand was drawn in early 2009, when he informed Congressional Republicans that he had won the election, then proceeded to give Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Harry Reid (D-NV) the keys to the Congressional kingdom. Today, the president's plan to freeze federal spending makes it look like he is admitting to having chosen the wrong policies over the first half of his presidential term. Worst still, the president's political concession this week to the Republicans - much like McCain's concession to him during the controversy over the first presidential debate in September 2008 - says a lot about the perceptions of power and vulnerability in Washington these days. If this is what the Democrats have to look forward to for the next two years, Obama won't be reelected in 2012.

Sadly for the president's legacy, this week's political admission stands as merely another example of Mr. Obama eating political crow so soon after ruling the roost. Whether the president can recover in time for the 2012 election remains an open question.

The mark of a great leader is success on the battlefield. This axiom applies equally to military and political campaigns. A testament to the extraordinarily successful leadership of Michael Steele as chairman of the Republican National Committee is reflected in the 2010 tidal wave election that propelled a record number of Republicans into office and shocked Democrats to their core.

Two years ago when Chairman Steele was first elected after a spirited and hard-fought battle where several other candidates were vying for the RNC chairmanship, the political landscape for Republicans looked bleak. Faced with the results of the 2006 Congressional election debacle for Republicans and the loss of the presidency in 2008 to a charismatic liberal Democrat, President Barack Obama, Chairman Steele launched a bold strategy for a Republican resurgence. His vision was to focus on listening to average Americans and communicating the Republican Party's founding principles of lower taxes, less government, more freedom and individual responsibility. This tactical move proved providential as average Americans spontaneously started a grassroots Tea Party movement against the Democratic Party's out-of-control spending that destroyed our economy, grew the government and eroded our basic freedoms.

The new Republican majority in the House of Representatives was elected on a promise to put a check on the liberal agenda and reckless spending of the Obama Administration. Without a doubt, Chairman Steele possesses the qualities of all great leaders who are able to develop and execute a winning strategy while bravely enduring hostile fire from opponents and detractors. The RNC By The Numbers

Building at the Grassroots by Affirming Conservative Principles

The RNC has gotten back to the values that define the party, and won back the support of grassroots conservative voters, thus boosting turnout for GOP candidates, and averting third party challenges.

The result: for the first time since 1930, more Republican voters voted in statewide primaries. Four million more GOP than Democrat voters voted in 35 primaries held before September 1^st.

Fundraising

The RNC has raised and spent more money on behalf of Republican candidates-by far-than any other entity, including both official GOP campaign committees and nominally independent groups that are not bound by the legal limits that apply to the RNC.

The RNC already has smashed the record for most money collected in a cycle by any committee whose party does not control Congress or the White House. Thus far, RNC receipts already exceed $175 MILLION, 34% more than the previous record set by the DNC over the entire 2006 cycle.

Thus far in the 2010 cycle, the RNC already has exceeded the amount of hard money raised by the RNC in 1994, even after adjusting for inflation.

Over 1,000,000 donors have given so far this year-far more than the last mid-term election year-with over 220,000 donations in September alone.

To date, the RNC has gained over 665,000 NEW donors this cycle, far more than the last mid-term.

The RNC's expanded donor base reflects its grassroots focus: the average gift is $43.71.

Ground Game, Technology, and GOTV

The RNC has established 360 Victory offices with paid and volunteer staff all across the country, compared to just 154 Victory offices in 2008 and 140 in 2006.

The RNC is fighting for votes in every part of the country, in every community, and among every voter group, with a renewed focus on the state and local levels. The RNC invested $9.5 million in the Virginia and New Jersey gubernatorial races, up from $1.2 million in 2005, ensuring that those wins provided critical momentum for the Republican Revival of 2010.

The RNC already has made over 34 million voter contacts, far more than even the 2008 presidential.

The RNC website has been completely revamped in 2009, making it a true "web platform". The number of page views are up 159%. Email has been vastly improved: the RNC has a 40% open rate-up from about 3% in 2008-and a click through rate of close to 15%.

Late-Term Abortionist Moves into Germantown, Md Clinic

Washington DC- Late-term abortionist, Leroy Carhart, the Nebraska doctor who is one of the few in the country to perform abortions late in a pregnancy is planning to begin offering the controversial procedures at a clinic in Germantown, Md; states a Washington Post report. A late-term abortion refers to an induced abortion procedure that occurs ANY time after 20 weeks gestation. Maryland is ideal for the abortionist as the state has no restrictive pro-life legislation.

Formally based in Nebraska, Carhart was poetically ousted by Nebraska's new abortion ban, Legislative Bill 1103, which made the barbaric procedure illegal. It is suspected Carhart logistically chose Maryland to target DC residents. Maryland, which enacted a FOCA (Freedom of Choice Act) - type law in 1991, has seen a huge increase in abortions in the state, while abortions nationwide have decreased.

Leadership and staff of the Frederick Douglass Foundation are outraged that such a procedure is seen as a protected right in some states. In light of these reports Dr. Timothy F. Johnson, Chairman and Founder of the Frederick Douglass Foundation, expressed his deep concern for the direction the country is headed when discussing the right to life topic.

"When so many can remain complacent to the injustices of an unborn child, we know there is a great need for prayer," states Dr. Johnson.

"The impact of abortion procedures on the black community is vast as it is the number one cause of death for blacks in the United States. Mothers need a support system, an outreach group of counselors, pro-life advocates and spiritual leaders who can provide alternatives to abortion."

"Operation Rescue is working with Maryland and Washington, D.C. pro-life groups to employ peaceful, legal means to halt Carhart's plans to do late-term abortions in Germantown," the group said in a statement.

Chairman Johnson ends his statement by saying, "We, at the Frederick Douglass Foundation believe all should respect the God-given right to life by recognizing all human beings as persons who are "created in the image of God" from the beginning of their biological development... without exceptions."

Democrats have a diversity problem.

There, I said it. Many of you reading might be doing a double-take, thinking I went really "against the grain" with this column. You're thinking: It's clear Democrats are a much more inclusive party-just look at the fact that nearly one-third of House Democrats are non-white, while Republicans have struggled to diversify.

And am I so naïve to forget Democrats nominated and elected President Obama, the first black president?

But look deeper at the composition of Congress and the governorships, and it's apparent the Democrats' strong racial record is somewhat misleading, with its advantage in electing minorities mostly a result of House districts specifically drawn to elect minorities.

Of the 75 black, Hispanic, and Asian-American Democrats in Congress and governorships, only nine represent majority-white constituencies-and that declines to six in 2011. Two of the party's rising black stars who sought statewide office this year were rejected by their party's own base. And when you only look at members of Congress or governors elected by majority-white constituencies (in other words, most of the governorships and Senate seats, and 337 out of 435 House seats), Democrats trail Republicans in minority representation.

In fact, Republicans experienced a diversity boomlet this year. Cognizant of their stuffy national image, party leaders made a concerted effort to recruit a more diverse crop of candidates. That resulted in more than doubling the number of minority elected officials from six to 13-and a ten-fold increase (from one to 10) in the number of minorities representing majority-white constituencies.

The numbers reflect an inconvenient reality-even with their more diverse caucus, Democrats face the same challenges as Republicans in recruiting, nominating, and electing minority candidates to statewide office and in majority-white suburban and rural districts. The vast majority of black and Hispanic members hail from urban districts that don't require crossover votes to win, or represent seats designed to elect minorities. They are more liberal than the average Democrat, no less the average voter, making it more difficult to run statewide campaigns.

These are far from trivial facts. This means Democrats lack a bench of minority candidates who can run for statewide office, no less national office. Most Democratic minorities make a career in the House, accruing seniority and influence but lacking broad-based political support.

The prime culprit in preventing minorities from having broader appeal is the process of gerrymandering majority-minority seats. It has guaranteed blacks and Hispanics representation, but at the cost of creating seats where candidates would have to appeal to a broader constituency, white and non-white alike. For decades, such districts were judicially mandated; in the South, officials still need clearance from the Justice Department to decrease the proportion of blacks voters in a district.

The logic behind gerrymandering stems from the Civil Rights era, when white voters were highly unlikely to vote for African-American candidates, so districts needed to be drawn so black voters could elect their own to Congress. It was effective-and necessary-to bring diversity to a homogeneous body. But now, the consequence of these contortions comes at great expense to Democrats and civil rights leaders alike.

The increase in minority representation comes at the cost of electing more moderate minorities best-positioned to win statewide. And by concentrating so many Democrats in one single district, it also protects neighboring Republicans -- a major reason why Republicans often are behind some of the most contorted gerrymandering plans.

"It's not in the best interests of Southern voters, it's certainly not in the interest of people who want a non-racial politics focused on substance and identity, and the content of a candidate's character, not the color of their skin," said outgoing Rep. Artur Davis, D-Ala., a centrist black congressman who lost his state's gubernatorial primary this year.

The electorate is changing, too. Republicans this year elected two blacks from the South in white districts, Reps.-elect Tim Scott, R-S.C., and Allen West, R-Fla. Two Indian Americans, Gov. Bobby Jindal and Gov.-elect Nikki Haley, will lead the deep South states of Louisiana and South Carolina, respectively.

The obstacle for many black Democrats, Davis argued, is liberalism, not race.

"There's no question in my mind white Southern voters will vote for a black candidate if they believe they are sympathetic to their viewpoint," Davis said. "Tim Scott's election in South Carolina is powerful, overwhelming evidence that even conservative southern white voters will vote for a black candidate, but they will not vote for someone who disagrees with them on every issue under the sun."

Meanwhile, talented black House Democrats looking to broaden their horizons have hit roadblocks-not from voters, but from party leaders and activists. Davis ran as a moderate in his bid for governor of Alabama, avoiding racial appeals and distancing himself from the Obama administration's policies. He didn't even get out of the gubernatorial primary, rejected by both black leaders for not toeing the party line and party activists, many of whom backed his more-liberal, white primary opponent.

Rep. Kendrick Meek, D-Fla., a rising star in Congress, finished a distant third in the Florida Senate race, capturing just 20 percent of the vote. He barely won the Democratic vote over Gov. Charlie Crist, according to exit polls, and won just 12 percent of the white vote. Much of his support was concentrated in black precincts.

In an interview, Davis put the reality for his party bluntly: If black leaders don't broaden their appeal, there will be a permanent ceiling for them.

"If they care about their children being able to aspire to being senator or governor, then they're going to have to recognize that candidates that run only as leaders of the black community... those candidates can't win -- and they will be completely non-competitive out of predominantly black districts," Davis said.

"The only kind of black candidate who can win outside of a state like Massachusetts or New York is one who can win significant support from white, independent voters."

Contrast that with the GOP's minority stars. Florida Sen.-elect Marco Rubio, Haley, New Mexico Gov.-elect Susana Martinez, and Nevada Gov.-elect Brian Sandoval are being mentioned as national candidates for 2012. Scott is one of two freshman liaisons to House Republican leaders. GOP leaders are eager to showcase this, partly because of their recent lack of diversity in the ranks.

The GOP success this year in electing minority leaders who can appeal to a wide cross-section of voters should serve as a wake-up call to Democrats, who are accustomed to carrying the mantle of diversity. If Democrats don't address their own challenges recruiting minority candidates with widespread appeal, the rise of Obama could be more the exception than the rule.

In Case You Missed It: Former Paradise Valley Mayor Vernon Parker announces run for Arizona GOP chair

PHOENIX, AZ -- Former Paradise Valley Mayor Vernon Parker announced that he will run for chairman of the Arizona Republican Party.

Parker said Nov. 23 that he is the candidate who can unite the GOP establishment and grassroots activists, two wings of the party that have been at odds for years.

"That's been the problem with the party," Parker said of the fractured GOP. "I have a vision for where the party should be going, and that is to work with all facets of the party, and more importantly to make sure we maintain our core values."

Parker said he would announce several endorsements next week. He also said he expects the support and endorsement of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, a close ally who endorsed Parker in his 10-way Republican primary for Arizona's 3rd Congressional District.

Parker became the third candidate to announce a run for state chairman. Former Yavapai County GOP Chairman Malcolm Barrett and Pinal County GOP Chairman Marty Hermanson are running as well. Former state Chairman John Munger said he is also considering a run.

The race opened after Pullen lost his Nov. 17 reelection bid for Republican state committeeman in District 11. State law and party bylaws require the state GOP chairman to be a state committeeman, though there were other ways Pullen could have circumvented the system to run. But Pullen announced the next day that he would not seek a third term.

While the other candidates in the race have criticized Pullen and his often rocky tenure as head of the Arizona Republican Party, Parker was supportive of the two-term incumbent. Parker had said he would not run against Pullen, and expressed interest in the race only after Pullen announced that he wouldn't run again.

"I'm not running against Randy Pullen's record. Randy was our party chairman, and he did the best job that he could. He did a good job for the party. His heart was in the Republican Party. This is not a bash-Randy-Pullen session," Parker said.

We are in times of tremendous restructuring within the Republican Party. Black Conservatives are demanding their rightful seat at the decision making table after accomplishing historic wins this past election. The Frederick Douglass Foundation was at the forefront of the Republican Party's success this fall with the promotion and subsequent election of a number of Black GOP candidates. Derived from these events was a momentum fostered from our energy and efforts across the country.

People of all races are outraged with the direction this country is headed. Socialism is being choked down our throats, as immoral legislation is being pushed through the lame duck, democratic lead congress including: repeal of don't ask don't tell, the Dream Act and the heavily funded "health initiative" that promote population control and furthering the efforts of the eugenics movement.

As previously stated, "We are not resting". Allowing Status Quo to prevail within the party at such a pivotal moment in American history would be irresponsible on all principle based true conservatives. Hillary Clinton announced the launch of a new program that according to Clinton will now become the centerpiece of U.S. foreign policy. This new program is known as the Global Health Initiative, and it is being incredibly well-funded. According to Clinton, 63 billion dollars will be spent by the U.S. to prevent pregnancies and to improve "family planning" services around the globe over the next six years. Manhattan Institute internships provide students interested in public policy with a unique work experience at a leading right-of-center think tank. MI brings free market perspective to key domestic policy issues, including budget and fiscal issues, energy, health care, education, and culture. Interns are given broad exposure to our work by contributing directly to various MI departments. Responsibilities include editing, administrative tasks, and some research. Interns are matched according MI's needs, the applicants past experience and their interests.

Students wishing to apply should send a 500 to 700 word autobiography, a current resume, a recommendation from a former employer or teacher, a transcript and a writing sample. The autobiography should explain the student's education, work, other activities and future goals as they relate to an internship at the Manhattan Institute. In Case You Missed It: African-American Politicians Under Attack in Washington

In 2010, African-American politicians find themselves under siege.

Black political power and influence appears strafed and demolished in less than two weeks time. Even President Barack Obama is not immune as he fends off assaults from both left and right, including a Washington Post column by two prominent Democratic strategists recommending he pass on re-election in 2012.

A combination of scandal, Republican electoral tsunamis and lack of a coordinated response to the new political climate have left Black politicos trapped in a smoky wilderness of uncertainty.

It could not have come at a worse time for African Americans, near paralyzed by unemployment double the national average, record foreclosure rates and a recession which vaporized a quarter of the Black middle class.

Two of the most senior Black Members of Congress - Rep. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., and Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., - are faced with full-blown ethics "trials" this lame duck session of Congress, with two additional Members - Rep. G.K. Butterfield, D-N.C., and Rep. Alcee Hastings, D-Fla., - in the House Ethics Committee pipeline for further consideration.

Rangel's inquiry ended with the Harlem congressman being found guilty on 11 counts and the House Ethics Committee voting for censure. Rangel's demise quickly devolved into the heartbreaking embarrassment of a celebrated, longtime founding member of the Congressional Black Caucus - who once wielded the gavel to the most powerful committee in Congress - unable to afford a lawyer.

Yet, observers are left wondering why it went that far, especially after Ethics Committee lead counsel Blake Chisam reluctantly admitted at one point on the record that he saw "... no evidence of corruption" in the Rangel case.

"We're in a period here where due process is inconvenient," says Lauren Victoria Burke of Crewof42.com.

"I hope that my colleagues in Congress, friends, constituents and anyone paying attention will consider my statement and how the Committee has been unfair to me," complained Rangel, rambling defensively in a statement released shortly after his abrupt and reality show-like exit from an adjudicatory subcommittee hearing last Monday. "They can do what they will with me because they have the power and I have no real chance of fighting back."

Waters, once a rhetorical titan and activist member who would famously dress-down House committee witnesses, is barely audible and under the radar. While she vehemently denies any wrongdoing, she's been largely quiet, reserving comment until her trial scheduled before the end of the session. Rangel, for his part, won't go down without a fight. The New York lawmaker plays hardball with plans to run for ranking minority member on the committee he previously chaired. Obviously, that will be a long shot given the recent censure rebuke.

But, it's not just Rangel and Waters that have the tightly knit, 40-year old CBC worried. The Black Caucus is frantically searching for some footing on the new political landscape. Its predominant Democratic make-up creates a problematic political calculus as it enters a Republican-led Congress next year.

How they decide to interface with the two new Black Republicans on the block, Rep.-elect Tim Scott, S.C., and Rep.-elect Allen West, Fla., is unknown. Still, the newly elected chairman of the CBC, Rep. Emmanuel Cleaver, D-Mo., is famously known for his ability to reach across the aisle.

And Cleaver, who barely managed to beat back a belligerent Republican challenger two weeks ago, won't be expected to play defense for the White House all the time.

"We recognize the need to support the president, but there's also the feeling being expressed rather loudly that the White House will become concerned only about the survival of the president in 2012, and we will be out here blowing in the wind," Cleaver said in a telling interview with the Kansas City Star, his hometown newspaper. "We may be moving down two separate paths toward 2012."

"With Cleaver at the wheel, look for a more pointed reality-based appraisal of the CBC's dealings with the White House," notes Burke.

Also set to lose their House chairmanships in January are Judiciary Committee chair John Conyers, D-Mich., and Homeland Security chair Bennie Thompson, D-Miss.
Republicans, however, are among the least of the CBC's concerns as the venerable Black political institution finds itself actually having to scrape for leadership positions within its own minority party.

When House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., announced an impasse-breaking deal to create a brand new No. 3 minority leadership position for loyal deputy and House Majority Whip James Clyburn, D-S.C., the Democratic Caucus breathed a heavy sigh of relief that a bruising intra-party contest was avoided between Clyburn and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md.

While many observers said Hoyer had the winning votes lined up, Clyburn still had a spoiler in his pocket: the other 41 House Members of the CBC, including two Maryland Members, who were ready to back their most powerful colleague at all political costs it seemed. Clyburn did not hide his feelings that the contest was about more than just him - he was on a "mission" to preserve the CBC's influence on the Hill amid devastating losses on Nov. 2.
But, at eleventh hour, Clyburn's resolve buckled under the weight of devotion to Pelosi, who announced a newly chiseled "Assistant Leader" position that would report to her. In the new spot, finalized by a vote from Democratic Members, Clyburn would report to her in a fashion similar to Rep. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., who now holds the "assistant to the speaker" position.

Satisfied that disaster was averted, Clyburn ran to the Caucus for support. "What we are doing is saying that everybody will maintain their relative position in the 112th," Clyburn said in a CNN interview. "So there is nothing unusual about this, and I was very pleased with the agreement that Speaker Pelosi came with."

A skeptical CBC, eyeing the move with suspicion, wants details. "You mean 'assistant TO THE leader," snapped a source close to the Caucus who did not want to be identified. "Clyburn should have gone all out with it. He looks weak and the CBC doesn't want to look weak along with him."

CBC Chair Rep. Barbara Lee, D-Calif., appeared to confirm as much. "We fully support our current whip, Mr. Clyburn, for the No. 3 position and we're currently reserving judgment on the entire package until we see what the actual portfolio entails in terms of responsibilities," Lee told a group of reporters after a closed-door meeting of the Caucus which discussed, among other things, its fate in the new Congress.

"It's that quintessential example of the rules getting changed when it comes to African American politicians," says The Source Magazine's political editor Jason Johnson. "The fact that Clyburn's position has to be eliminated and re-created is absurd."
But, some observers note that Clyburn did not want ranking Latino Democrat Rep. Xavier Becerra (D-CA) bumped from the leadership caucus, which could have happened under a shake-up.

"Clyburn did not want to bump Becerra, which is smart if you think about it given that [Latino] voting bloc and other issues like immigration. He took the hit, in a way, to keep Becerra in the leadership."

It's not like the Caucus hasn't been in bad spots before. But, this year found the Caucus besieged by an incessant string of high profile troubles peppered with gaffes, missteps and ethics debacles. Lee's reservations reflect a growing sense that the CBC is losing grip as three of its Members lose powerful Committee chairs and eighteen will no longer Chair subcommittees.

The uncomfortable jolt of reality is already spurring bold bids for ranking member positions on major committees as Black members find their bearing.

Outgoing House Government Reform Committee Chair Rep. Edolphus Towns (D-NY), a longtime king of the Brooklyn political machine, wants to stay on as the committee's Ranking Member to the chagrin of leading Democrats - including one corner that needs him the most: the White House.

Towns is ready to glove-up and go cage match with an emboldened incoming chair Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA), the loquacious center-right Congressman who's promised to blast the Obama Administration with a ceaseless barrage of inquiries, probes and subpoenas.
Appearing on a CNBC program on Election Night, Issa argued that the administration was "corrupt and arrogant."

And then there's Rep. Chaka Fattah, D-Pa., the West Philly political brawler who had announced back in May that if Democrats retained their majority, he would pursue an unorthodox seniority-bucking bid for chair of the powerful House Appropriations Committee.
Willing to shake up the antiquated Democratic seniority system Fattah planned to hurdle from his No. 21 spot all the way to the top, directly bumping heads with longtime lawmaker Rep. Norm Dicks (D-WA). Now, Fattah says that he's switching gears and gunning for Ranking Minority Member, a move certain to rile both Dicks and senior Democrats who've been waiting in line.

That prompts a larger question: how bad is it?

"I definitely think it's a challenging time," admits Angela Rye, Founder and Director of Strategic Partnerships for D.C.-based IMPACT-DC, an organization closely aligned with the CBC. "But, it's been a challenging time for years. There is a lot of work we can continue to do."

Rye argues, along with other leading Black Democratic strategists, that the CBC still retains some power as former chairs will simply transition into ranking member status.
Johnson partly agrees.

"I'm not willing to claim it's as bad as the nineties where it seemed as if every single Black mayor was under investigation," says the political science professor. "Or when every Black cabinet member in the Clinton Administration was under investigation - with one ending up dead in a plane crash," citing the tragic and untimely death of former Commerce Secretary Ron Brown.

Still, there is a larger issue of waning Black political influence nationwide. Loss of 19 state legislatures to Republicans, who now wield the ruthless magic wand of redistricting, poses a political life-and-death scenario to the 630 Black state legislators (mostly Democrats) spread throughout the fifty states.

Some are nervous they could lose seats to a happily gerrymandering GOP. In Pennsylvania, longtime political powerhouse state Rep. Dwight Evans, D-Philadelphia, lost his position as the top Democrat on the state House Appropriations Committee following the GOP takeover of Harrisburg.

Even on the Republican side - and despite major gains for the party on Nov. 2nd - a chorus of GOP elected officials are calling for the resignation of Republican National Committee Chair Michael Steele, the party's first Black chair. Recently, Steele's own political director Gentry Collins resigned in a flashy public retort of Steele's tenure.

"In stark contrast [to 2004 and 2008], we enter the 2012 presidential cycle with 100 percent of the RNC's $15 million in lines of credit tapped out, and unpaid bills likely to add millions to that debt," Collins spit in a scathing letter to the RNC.

Republicans, no longer feeling defensive about the lack of diversity in their party after so many GOP minorities winning office, view Steele's ouster as a risk their willing to take.
"I have long championed Michael Steele, not because I'm a partisan, but because the guy has been winning since he's been in office," argues Johnson. "Republicans get the biggest wins they've had in six years and now he's out of a job? I think that's pure racism."

In Case You Missed It: Will the North Carolina GOP Choose a Black Leader?

The departure of Republican State Chairman Tom Fetzer creates an opportunity for Timothy Johnson, an African American, to move up from the No. 2 position. His selection could signal the end of the Southern strategy.

Just a few months after North Carolina Republican Chairman Tom Fetzer asked for the resignation of Michael Steele from the top post at the Republican National Committee, Fetzer is now tending his own resignation, effective in January. The reasons for his departure are less interesting than the issue of succession: Are local Republican organizations buying into the cultural-diversity movement within the party?

The No. 2 person in the North Carolina GOP is Timothy F. Johnson, best known as the founder of the Frederick Douglass Foundation, an organization that mirrors the Christian and Republican principles of its namesake. Johnson easily won the vice chair's position in 2009 with the support of dissatisfied Republicans and new-school conservatives (including the Tea Party crowd and young Republicans).

Despite the very tenuous relationship between Fetzer and Johnson, Johnson's influence has gone from local to national. His advocacy has led to the expansion of his foundation into a force that contributed to the emergence of more than 30 black Republican candidates for Congress in 2010 and two significant victories earlier this month. The organization's staunch pro-life position, its embrace of Christian identity and its ever expanding network within Republican circles nationally would suggest that Johnson should be a shoo-in for the job, giving North Carolina its first black GOP chairman ever and only the fourth at the state level in Republican history.

Yet despite a track record of pulling nontraditional resources together to break new ground for the Republicans in the age of Obama, Johnson faces obstacles in winning promotion to the No. 1 spot, possibly because of fears in the establishment Republican base that he has a propensity not to be controlled by the "powers that be."

Already there are reports that former Rep. Robin Hayes is a likely successor. Hayes is a good man, but given his loss to a weak candidate -- current Rep. Larry Kissell (D-N.C.) -- after years of incumbency, the question is whether Hayes is the best choice to deliver an effective and persuasive message to independents and the growing conservative base during the 2012 election cycle.

Hayes, a North Carolina businessman born to a family fortune, is the beneficiary of legacy money that could help him network during fundraising. However, arguments that Johnson could not do the same -- despite his growing prominence at the national level, his political influence and his presence in print, television and radio -- come not just from Hayes supporters. Instead, the doubts hark back to the oft-used code against black leaders in the GOP: They may be good cheerleaders and speakers on national issues for Republicans, but they do not have the ability or potential to raise the dollars necessary to qualify as true leaders in the party.

That rhetoric is akin politically to the argument in athletics that black quarterbacks are very gifted athletically but do not have the moxie to lead teams to Super Bowls (see Super Bowl MVP Doug Williams or the late Steve McNair), or that extremely gifted black NBA players do not possess the yeoman's work ethic to will a team to a championship (see Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant).

Ask Meg Whitman whether raising exorbitant amounts of money automatically translates into victories in November. Furthermore, the small-donor momentum that has served candidates from Obama in 2008 to Tea Party-backed winners in 2010 has shown that big political dollars can be countered if a political personality or movement is better able to connect with undecided voters and politically charged newbies than with old-money activists.

The American voting public -- obviously upset with how politics have played out over the past several years -- has made it perfectly clear: If they have a guy they believe in, they will work to overcome past financial shortfalls and perception issues to make victories happen in both primary and general elections.

The names being thrown about to counter Johnson would suggest that North Carolina Republicans don't see him as their type of guy. But that argument doesn't hold water once you remember that Johnson won the No. 2 position with 62 percent of the vote in a two-person race. So it appears that a question of political maturity has cropped up once again -- for black Republicans, for the legacy Republicans of the infamous Southern strategy, for the millennials and Gen Xers coming into the fold, and for the Tea Party's assortment of activists.

The North Carolina GOP statewide race means a lot more to local and state elections over the next two years than one would anticipate. If Johnson -- a man not from legacy money and clearly not the "legacy choice" of the GOP, but one who has garnered respect from all sides, including his political opponents in the Congressional Black Caucus -- wins the top post in a few weeks, it could signify an important change for the local and state brands of the Republican Party, perhaps one that Michael Steele couldn't make as the national chair.

Until then, it will be interesting to see if the powers-that-be within the state's GOP determine whether the substance of what a man can do for the party -- including a track record over the past two years of successful advocacy -- outweighs the scuttlebutt from haters and the myths of the power of money in political leadership today. Ultimately we will know how far the core workings of Republican grass-roots leadership have changed -- and what has stayed the same.

WASHINGTON -- Nov. 24, 2010 -- The terrorists win again as Americans line up like sheep at airports to be "virtually" disrobed in high-tech X-ray machines or physically assaulted by government representatives. It's all in the name of safety - being treated like a criminal at the airport, telling farmers how to grow crops or giving kids a "fat" report card.

Implementing more and more "safety" measures is not about safety. It's all more steps toward eroding our freedoms and making us pliable under a paternal, domineering government.

The Constitutional role of keeping citizens safe has been twisted into a real Gordian knot. A government that will implement screening measures that assault the very core of personal freedom but at the same time refuses to secure our borders is hard to take serious.

Thomas Jefferson warned against assuming the government would vigilantly protect our rights saying "that confidence is everywhere the parent of despotism."

George Washington once said, "Government is not reason, it is not eloquence - it is a force! Like fire, it is a dangerous servant and a fearful master."

Expressing need for the people to never stop watching those in charge Alexander Hamilton in Federalist Papers, No. 25 wrote, "For it is a truth, which the experience of all ages has attested, that the people are commonly most in danger when the means of injuring their rights are in the possession of those whom they entertain the least suspicion."

Janet Napolitano illustrated well why we must remain a bit suspicious and think for ourselves at a press conference last week when she said, "Everybody has a role to play" in preventing terrorism "and if people don't want to play that role, if they want to travel by some other means, of course that's their right."

It's a false choice she presents.

Basically her message is either be a team player and give up your dignity and freedom at the airport or take the bus - all in the name of safety. Does she really believe that terrorists won't think to blow up a bus or train? Will we be surprised when after a terrorist blows up a bus with a bomb in some orifice that suddenly "playing our role" entails a thorough pat down before boarding any form of public transportation?

Power concentrated in the hands of the wrong people is dangerous to freedom.

Whether or not the current administration is as successful at a methodical and maniacal pursuit of monstrous government as Woodrow Wilson with his creation of the ever progressing income tax, Federal Reserve, Federal Trade Commission and blatant racism or Richard Nixon with his paranoia, wage and price controls, abolition of the gold standard and creation of the EPA only history will tell.

The visceral gut reaction normal Americans have toward the new airport "procedures" in the name of safety is correct as are reactions to supposed health care reform, the Dream Act, the Food Safety Modernization Act and everything else the government dreams up to undermine the God given right and responsibility to first take care of ourselves and family and then to help those in need around us.

The founders understood that the government is made up of fallible, fragile men and women who, again in the words of Thomas Jefferson, must be bound "down from mischief by the chains of the Constitution."

Those who believe that the Constitution is out dated and that the American fetish for freedom in the form of self governance as built into that sacred document is passé don't want us to know the truth about our own history or the eons of world history the founders studied to build the foundation for what as of yet is the greatest nation on earth.

House Needs to Enhance Diversity, Tri-Caucus Says

The Congressional Tri-Caucus sent a letter to the chairmen of the House Administration Committee and the House GOP transition team Tuesday asking them to preserve and enhance the chamber's staff diversity program in the 112th Congress.

The letter to House Administration Chairman Robert Brady (D-Pa.) and GOP transition head Rep. Greg Walden (Ore.) calls the initiative an important priority for the nation.
"The House-wide staff diversity initiative, with outreach and recruitment activities, is an important part of ensuring equal employment opportunities to candidates from all backgrounds and diverse representation of our multi-faceted nation within the House staff," the letter reads. "We urge that the initiative not only be preserved, but that it be provided with the resources necessary to execute its important charge."

The letter was signed by Democratic Reps. Mike Honda (Calif.), Barbara Lee (Calif.) and Nydia Velázquez (N.Y.), who chair the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, the Congressional Black Caucus and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, respectively.
The Members note that the diversity program was developed in consultation with Speaker-designate John Boehner (R-Ohio) and House Administration ranking member Dan Lungren (R-Calif.), who is the presumptive chairman.

"We welcome any recommendation Members want to share with the transition team," said spokesman Brendan Buck. "We're glad they're engaging in the process."

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) introduced the diversity initiative in April. It tasks House officials with developing a résumé bank, creating educational resources for Member offices and requiring legislative branch agencies to write reports on the state of their diversity. The House Administration Committee oversees the program, and members of the Tri-Caucus serve on an advisory panel.

A spokesman for Brady was not immediately available to comment.

Lenny McAllister Takes a Strong Stance

Lenny McAllister guest hosted "The Other Side" on WVON last Wednesday evening. He spoke with Black conservative pundit Kevin Jackson, after another attack on the First Lady, about the difference between empty commentary and necessary leadership.

Before the show Lenny, on his Facebook page, posted a side by side image of himself picking cotton and the orignal unflattering picture of the FLOTUS.

McAllister made the following statement with regards to the two images:

"perhaps to learn if the bond to historical obligations (pictured left) is stronger than the urge to propagate the worst among us for the sake of pop politics (pictured right). I have said this before and I mean it: Black political thought will end up being the salvation for urban America in the 21st century, and that salvation will not come without the conscientiousness and cooperative advocacy of Black Republicans for the masses of Black people suffering in America. That cannot and will not come about - in fact, it will never come about - as long as these types are propagated throughout the media, made worse no less by the fact that this behavior was instituted by "The Black Glenn Beck."

Dr. Timothy F Johnson, Founder and Chairman of the Frederick Douglass Foundation, made the following statement concerning the topic:

"...this conversation needs to take place. Just like many think all Blacks are Democrats and support the POTUS. The same can be said about people's perception about Black Republicans. It's time to have a real conversation in the open and that is what is going to start happening."

When all was said and done many opinions were shared over the outcome of the show. Comments regarding the airing ranged from McAllister being exhaulted for taking a stance to critisized for his demeanor and "calling out" a fellow black conservative activist.

Realistically, the show proved the black conservative is not a monolith. The range in theory and ideology amongst black conservatives is as old a battle as the issues of field and house negros. Ultimately, we have the same vision however, the approach for our goals at least by this organizations standards, should be presented with poise and class.

North Carolina Republican Party Vice Chairman Timothy F. Johnson announces his run to replace current State Chairman Tom Fetzer at the NCGOP State Executive Committee meeting on Dr. Martin Luther King's Birthday, January 15th.

Mr. Fetzer announced at the North Carolina Republican Party's State Executive Committee meeting on Saturday, November 20th that he would be resigning effective January 15th due to his new family obligations. Fifty-five years old and married for the first time, October 2009, his wife recently gave birth to their son and he says he wants to spend more time with them since the historical victories in North Carolina and the re-election of US Senator Richard Burr. It is also widely rumored that Fetzer personally recruited and the Associated Press has reported that former Congressman Robin Hayes would be seeking the chairmanship in January.

Frederick Douglass Foundation Vice Chairman Dean Nelson said "Many of you know Tim, as the Founder and Chairman of the Frederick Douglass Foundation. Under his leadership, the Foundation has expanded to over 20 states with thousands of members and supporters who represent the diversity of America . I couldn't let this unprovoked assault, and mis-characterization go without a response. Urban conservatives are just conservatives with an inner city focus. We welcome constructive criticism and dissent, but most of all we welcome people who are willing to roll up their sleeves so we can break the liberal monopoly that's plagued inner cities for the last several decades.

Urban Conservative vs. Officer Nelvin Ziplock

As I was driving home from a violence prevention townhall, I noticed Officer Ziplock following me. "Dang it, again?" I thought to myself.

Officer Ziplock came to my house a few months ago and asked me to drop the term "urban" because it was synonymous with "black". He informed me now that I live on the Conservative side of town, I don't need to self identify as "urban" or talk about race under any circumstances whatsoever. I showed him a Wikipedia article that defined "urban" as being "of or related to the city" - to no avail. Officer Ziplock warned me he'd be keeping his eyes on me and I noticed he had been following me around town the last few months. He even emailed me on facebook, but I never responded. I remember an incident in the supermarket where I noticed some eyes staring back at me through the cracks in the aisle right by the Apple Jack's boxes. It kind of creeped me out, but I figured, since he was the self-identified "conservative police", he was just doing his job. I always wondered how a public sector employee was busy stalking me and my urban conservative brethren instead of fighting crime and spreading the 'conservative' message to areas with very few conservatives.

As he started blinding me with his lights, through the loudspeakers he said, "PULL OVER IMMEDIATELY."

I was used to being profiled on both sides of town, so I complied. He knocked on my window, "Put your hands where I can see them. I don't trust you Urban Conservative Elitists one bit!" Frustrated because I was so tired from a long day I asked, "What is your problem with us anyways? I mean, seriously bro, what's your deal?"

"First of all, I told you about calling me that "brother" thing. I ain't, I mean, I'm not your brother! Secondly, the 4 or 5 of you who have been going around this side of town calling yourselves 'urban' conservatives REALLY bug me," he said.

"So, can I ask you something," I said, "If White people called themselves 'urban' conservatives, would that legitimize the movement for you?"

"Possibly. I usually wait for White Conservatives to tell me what to think," he responded.

I said, "I hate to break it to you, but there are self-identified white and Hispanic 'urban' conservatives. It's not a 'black thing'. Look man, you waiting for white conservatives to tell you what to think is cool and everything, but I would encourage you to read policy papers from the Manhattan, Hudson Institute, and the Heritage foundation that advocate directly for much of what the urban conservative platform entails."

"Are you talking about that 'silver rights' garbage? They didn't teach me that at 'Freedom is Free' University where I received my degree," he snapped.

Annoyed, I responded, "First of all, silver rights is not garbage. That's something that wasn't even originated by urban conservatives. We adopted it into our platform and message. John Hope Bryant, an independent activist, who received an award from George W. Bush came up with that concept. It's about personal fiscal conservatism and using entrepreneurship, not government, as a means to poverty reduction. I'm kind of saddened that you're scoffing at such a powerful message."

"Oh, I don't like it. You guys aren't just like me and I don't like it! I only feel comfortable when people repeat textbook talking points like 'limited government' , 'family values', and 'foreign policy,'" he said.

I responded, "Look Officer Ziplock, there isn't even a consensus within the conservative movement for all those 'conservative tenets' you just named! Libertarians disagree with Social Conservatives when it comes to what constitutes 'family values', and Paleo-conservatives disagree with Neo-conservatives when it comes to foreign policy. Didn't they teach you that at 'Freedom is Free' University?"

'No. I live in the real world and when I went to school, they taught me that the whole 'race' thing never existed, doesn't currently exist, and won't ever exist. Period. By the way, you're under arrest for disagreeing with me. Turn around."

He handcuffed me and took me to the precinct. I waited outside the office of the precinct captain. I heard the captain screaming so I began listening intently.

"What is wrong with you Officer Ziplock! Why do you think we've given you a flashlight instead of a gun! It's because of frivolous arrests like this! How can you be so pompous, and elitist to think that YOU SIR represent the intellectual diversity within conservative movement! Some of us understand a need for self-indentified 'Urban Conservatives' who are working tirelessly to get the hostages out of the liberal side of town! What about that don't you understand? Get a life and let her go. If I find out that you're profiling them again, you're going to regret it!"

Officer Ziplock came outside and said, "Um, you can go home now. I'm sorry for the trouble."

I said, "Look, bro, wait-sorry, look man, I'm not angry with you. I think you've been confusing race-consciousness with 'urban conservatism'. Urban conservatism, like conservatism, is about policy and the individual-not color-we just have an inner city focus. We believe in state's rights and local centralized planning as opposed to calling on out of touch bureaucrats to help with the social maladies in some communities-- just like you! The difference between us and you is that we don't believe in the whole one-size-fits-all policy approach. Look, we're all in this together. It's cool to criticize liberals in regards to their policy failures, and the same talking points that you say all the time sound cool too, but conservatives need to step their game up and present viable, solution-oriented policy alternatives. By the way, remember when you told my Nigerian brother to go back to Africa? Well, I thought that was really ignorant of you."

Officer Ziplock said, "The problem I have with 'urban conservatism' is it reminds me too much of that black thing I try my hardest to run away from."

"What black thing? There is nothing in the policy platform that even mentions black people. What is wrong with you?"

He leaned over and whispered, "You know, that thing...."

"What thing are you taking about???" I said.

Officer Ziplock started to do what looked like a sorry attempt at the Soulja boy 'superman' dance and after that he immediately started doing the electric slide. "That black thing," he said.

"So you think the urban conservative platform is like the electric slide? Oh! Silly boy, that's not a 'black' thing!"

He gave me a blank stare.

"Look man, I know you've been going through it. I don't have any hard feelings-but why don't you go to therapy or something?"

His face lit up...he said, "Really? You think therapy would help?"

I said, "Yeah man. I understand that things are a little stressful for you right now because you feel like you don't have a voice...."

He responded, "All right man, I'll go to therapy as long as it's not an 'urban' therapist."

Urban America doesn't need ideologues, urban America needs solution-oriented conservatism. Solution-oriented conservatism comes through public policy advocates and those who are invested in changing the paternalistic monopoly that's been a part of those communities for several decades. Conservatives of all colors and ethnicities need to put our heads together to save the inner cities in America. If constituents in the inner city can globally compete through education and economic expansion, America wins. Conservatism is clearly the answer. The time for textbook talking points that do nothing to address the real issues is over.

Why I support Michael Steele for RNC chair

I won't apologize for it. As a Frederick Douglass Republican, I support Michael Steele's bid for re-election as chairman of the Republican National Committee.

And yes, I know about the issues and controversies that have plagued Steele over the past two years. I didn't like them. But I also know what I don't like more: going back to a Republican Party that resembles the mood and feel of a 1960s upscale cocktail party - something where black folks are dressed to the nines, present and active, but mostly silent and serving as pawn-like support mechanisms.

To me, it comes down to this: the Republican Party's brand is stronger now than it was two years ago, when Steele took over the helm of the RNC. That's why Michael Steele deserves a second chance to make a first impression as RNC chair.

People far and wide complain about Michael Steele's tenure, but there are only two main criticisms of him: First, that he has riddled the RNC with controversies since taking over the helm; and second, that he has not been able to raise enough money.

But these bumps in the road have not stopped Republicans from making the progress they desperately needed to make after their branding and voting problems in 2008.

The controversies that have plagued Steele's RNC - everything from the well-intended (and perhaps much-needed) criticism of Rush Limbaugh to the LA bondage club scandal that tied RNC funds and strippers together in the media (sorry, I couldn't resist) - became front-page news, which got people talking about the RNC. People were not talking about the RNC chairman or the ability of the RNC to attract new voters, new candidates, new activists, and a new image in 2008. Back then, it was a given that the Republicans were unconcerned about reaching the millennial generation and urban America in general - the very demographics that changed American politics by supporting Barack Obama. It is true that Mr. Steele's affability has often led to a growing trait of "gaffability" that has hurt his personal brand, but his presence in the media has increased awareness of the Republican brand and helped humanize the party. Moves done by the Steele-led RNC over the past two years may be unpopular today, but his initiatives will benefit the Republican brand down the road. Another two years of Republican momentum and increased relevancy is worth the price of Steele's occasional gaffes.

Steele's critics have repeatedly hammered home his supposed inability to raise the necessary funds to win big elections. But those critics ignore the results of the two election nights he has presided over. If nothing else, Steele has proven his ability to both win big elections and change the image of Republican candidates and grassroots activists without watering down conservative principles.

Being able to raise money without being able to translate that money into electoral wins is useless. Ask Meg Whitman about having a healthy war chest but a poor image and message. If Republicans are more concerned about raising money than they are about electoral success and relevancy, they can go ahead and vote Steele out. But doing so will hurt the party's image.

Money doesn't win elections - people do. Say what you want about Steele, but there are more people involved in conservative politics and the Republican Party today than there were just two years ago, be it because of Michael Steele (who revamped the RNC website and expanded the RNC's use of new media) or in response to Michael Steele. Despite what the amnesiac Republican base believes today, Steele's leadership played a role in turning the GOP around. If Republicans want to continue to win, they shouldn't abandon Steele. In the end, Republicans will have to ask themselves if controversy-ridden success is better than controversy-free defeat.

A $10,000 grant from Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) of Outstate Michigan will help support the "Muenda ready for life initiative," a program of the Saginaw-based juvenile justice organization founded by Stacy Swimp. The grant will support specialized training manuals and journals that help guide and direct approximately 200 at-risk teens.

Enlightened Comments from one of our Readers

Last Wednesday marked the 112th anniversary of the Wilmington Race Riots. To commemorate, The Frederick Douglass Foundation sent out a Press Release detailing the historical events that took place on November 10th, 1898 that shaped 100 years of oppressive Jim Crow laws in America. A great number of responses were received praising FDF for their efforts to educate members and affiliates. One such comment from Frances Rice, took her praise a step further to provide more information on the topic. Here is what she wrote:

As a follow-up on the excellent Frederick Douglass Foundation article,
please note that the 2006 report of a Commission appointed by the Governor of North Carolina prompted the Democratic Party of North Carolina to pass a unanimous resolution in 2007 apologizing for the Democratic Party's role in the bloody 1898 Wilmington Race Riots where dozens of black Americans were massacred. In a letter to the North Carolina Democratic Party, North Carolina Lieutenant Governor Richard H. Moore wrote: "We can no longer ignore the fact that many of us grew up being taught a much sanitized - and inaccurate - history.. The truth is ugly."

The national Democratic Party has yet to apologize for their over two
hundred history of racism and racial violence against blacks. Facts about racism in the Democratic Party can be found in books such as "A Short History of Reconstruction" by Dr. Eric Foner and "Whites, Blacks & Racist Democrats" by Wayne Perryman. In his book, provides startling details about racism in the Democratic Party from 1792 to 2009. Perryman describes how the Democratic Party became known as the "Party of White Supremacy" that fought to preserve slavery and enacted discriminatory laws to deny civil rights to blacks. Perryman also sued the Democratic Party, demanding an apology for their history of racism based on the Democratic Party' "States
Rights" claims. The Democrats admitted their racist past under oath in court, but refused to apologize because they know that they can take the black vote for granted.

Washington DC- Dr. Timothy Johnson, Founder and Chairman of the Frederick Douglass Foundation, congratulates Frederick Douglass Foundation member and pro-life activist Dr. Alveda King.

Dr King, niece of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., is one of six individuals winning the "Life Prizes Award", a prestigious honor for her efforts in activism with the pro-life movement.

The Gerard Health Foundation says the winners are, "individuals or organizations that have achieved significant progress in promoting the sanctity of human life and are working to protect and preserve it."

"We are so very proud of our sister and fellow member, Dr Alveda King; says Chairman Johnson. It is through her continued diligence and faith in God that we are inspired."

The first "Life Prizes" awards were presented at a ceremony in 2009; the winners of this year's $600,000 in awards were chosen by a Selection Advisory Committee from 90 nominations submitted to the Foundation.

The foundation released its comments about each of the award winners and had this to say of Dr. Alveda King:

"It is altogether fitting that the niece of Martin Luther King, Jr. would become one of the most important leaders in the greatest civil rights battle of our day. As founder of King for America, Dr. Alveda King has been the public face of the pro-life movement in the African American community, speaking and advocating for years against abortion and especially the targeting of African Americans."

Raymond Ruddy, president of the Gerard Health Foundation, said in a statement concerning the winners:"We are pleased to present the second Life Prizes to such deserving recipients. These six winners are doing some of the pro-life movement's most important work, and it is right to celebrate their sacrifice and dedication. Each of them is an example to follow and we look forward to their future accomplishments in the cause of life."

DC/Maryland area Set to Open New Late Term Abortion Clinic

Washington DC- Late-term abortionist, Leroy Carhart, has announced he will attempt to open three new clinics in three different states with intentions to continue performing late-term abortions. He states that the reason for moving his late-term abortion business out of Bellvue is Nebraska's new law. Late Term abortions are now illegal under Nebraska's new abortion ban, Legislative Bill 1103.

Carhart's first clinic is set to open December 6th in the state of Maryland, just outside of D.C. Maryland enacted a FOCA(Freedom of Choice Act)- type law in 1991, which means no restrictive pro-life legislation. This in turn has led to a huge increase in abortions in the state, while abortions nationwide have decreased. Carhart is obviously targeting DC residents by taking advantage of the laws in the state of Maryland. He is slated to open two additional clinics in January; one in Council Bluffs, Iowa offering late-term abortions, also an Indianapolis abortion clinic, which specializes only in early-term abortions.

In light of these reports Dr. Timothy F. Johnson, Chairman and Founder of the Frederick Douglass Foundation, announced his disapproval of Freedom of Choice-type laws that allow such appalling procedures to take place and commend the Nebraska Right to Life movement for their success in initiating a ban in their state.

"We at the Frederick Douglass Foundation believe all should respect the God-given right to life by recognizing all human beings as persons who are "created in the image of God" from the beginning of their biological development, without exceptions," declared Johnson.

"I commend the efforts of all Right to Life groups and wish to applaud the success of Nebraska's organization. We will continue to support initiatives across the country until bans on partial birth abortions are fully implemented along with removal of FOCA - type legislation that is designed to protect the interests of the abortion industry, not women rights."

A late-term abortion refers to an induced abortion procedure that occurs ANY time after 20 weeks gestation. Nebraska's new law forbids abortions after 20 weeks post-conception on the basis that science shows the fetus experiences pain.

Chaplain Ayesha Kreutz, President of the New York Chapter of the Frederick Douglass Foundation made the following statement regarding this matter:

"We can see in Leroy Carhart the stubbornness and wickedness of men on display. He needs to let his heart be softened and touches of God's compassion wash over him. We need to be on our knees in fervent prayer for Maryland in hopes the people will awaken with boldness and speak out against Carhart setting up death mills in their area."

"It is only when a community becomes un-accepting, vocal and action oriented, like those in Nebraska, will the slaughter of innocent children be stopped. If Abortionist such as Carhart intends to help women and their children, then said assistance would come in the form of hope, life and peace instead of death, pain and shame."

New-school Republican pundit McAllister sparred with old-school Black conservative Armstrong Williams during the show while discussing "The Browning of the GOP" after the historic elections of several minority candidates on Election Night. Hill conducted the 45-minute interview with Frederick Douglass Republican activist Vanessa Jean Louis, McAllister, and Williams. "Some Black conservatives don't see the need today to be openly proud of both being Black and being American simultaneously," McAllister said offset after the show. "I do."

WVON's McAllister is also set to appear on the BET weekly political program along with guests that include television talk show host Wendy Williams ("The Wendy Williams Show") to discuss the latest in politics and current events. While there are many who are quick to cite the challenges Chairman Steele has had leading the Republican National Committee, those same individuals aren't as fast to give him credit for the numerous victories the Republican Party have achieved during his reign, as Chairman, to include winning back the US House of Representatives. Furthermore, we find it interesting to read today that Mr. Saul Anuzis, who served as Chairman of the Michigan Republican Party, ran for RNC Chairman in 2008 and served on Chairman Steele's transition team now believes he deserve an opportunity to be elected RNC Chairman, as we prepare to go up against President Obama's 2012 re-election campaign machine.

We may not have a vote, but we believe the 165 members of the RNC will respond positively when they hear their constituents in their respective states voice their support for the re-election of Chairman Steele.

Saul Claims Abortion Issue Will Hurt Party, Republican Should Just Drop The Issue. "Then, in a statewide public TV appearance, Zandstra told this story about getting a call from the chairman weeks ago: Zandstra was banging hard on his support for the ban on affirmative action and another amendment to declare life begins at conception. In the "conversation," Zandstra claims Anuzis wanted nothing to do with either issue because it could hurt the party. He claims that Anuzis told him, "You could win the primary but you cannot beat (incumbent Democratic Sen. Debbie Stabenow with those issues." Zandstra further contends the chairman asked him to cool his jets on the issues - or get out of the race." (Tim Skubick, "GOP Leader, Hopeful Sparring," Lansing State Journal, 6/2/2006)

We do not have a personal agenda against Mr. Anuzis. We simply want to make it clear, as others prodder entering the race against Chairman Michael Steele, that we have drown the line and picked the person we believe is in the best position to lead the Republican National Committee and win back the White House during the 2012 elections. Chairman Steele has proven his ability to overcome personal adversity and lead the Party to overwhelming victories. There is no other choice!

Chairs and leadership vow to remain vigilant in our efforts of holding our newly elected Congressional leaders, State legislators and Executives accountable for the hopes and principles expressed during the election season.

State leadership for the Frederick Douglass Foundation are actively mobilizing on the grassroots front to garner support of local GOP groups creating collaborations and key relationships. As it is our goal heading towards 2011 and 2012 to represent ourselves in strong indivisible numbers.

It goes with saying...
The Frederick Douglass Foundation realizes issues plaguing urban communities are far more pressing, outreaching and imperative to the needs of black sub-culture than those provincial concerns of Elitist Black NAACP Leaders.

NAACP Chairman Ben Jealous and NC State Chairman William Barber are still talking about a racist Tea Party when black children are forced to attend failing schools while the achievement gap continues to expand for Black males.

Our military personnel are being subjected to liberal ideas that systematically threaten the core values of our country. The number of unwed black mothers have more than tripled in the last 40 years while engulfed in President Johnson's "great society" programs and abortion is still the number one cause of infant mortality in the nation.

All this resulting under the "careful" watch of the NAACP and the Democrat agenda. The time for "change" has passed, the time for ACTION is now.

Don't Ask, Don't Tell' Repeal Faces New Struggle in Congress

WASHINGTON - Prospects for Congress to authorize repeal of the "don't ask, don't tell" policy face new uncertainties as time runs out for the Senate to act and objections remain among Republicans and the most senior ranks of the military.

Recent developments on Capitol Hill and within the military - including unusual comments over the weekend about sleeping arrangements by the new commandant of the Marine Corps - have clouded prospects for repeal.

The uncertainty comes even as Defense Secretary Robert Gates said for the first time that he would like the Senate to vote to authorize the repeal before the end of the year, and a not-yet-released Pentagon survey of active-duty forces and their families showed that the majority did not care if gay men and women served openly. In the meantime, a federal appeals court in California is considering whether the ban is constitutional.

The period of growing doubts in Washington has further aggravated tensions between gay rights groups and President Barack Obama, who campaigned on a promise to end the ban and allow gay men and women to serve openly.

Two main forces are working against repeal on Capitol Hill.

One is the simple matter of the congressional calendar. There will be little time in the lame-duck session that begins next week for the Senate to vote to authorize the repeal of the policy and reconcile its measure with a version passed by the House.

The other obstacle lies in the concerns of Sen. John McCain of Arizona, the senior Republican on the Armed Services Committee. Although McCain has said in the past that he would consider authorizing a repeal of the law once the Pentagon review was complete, he faced a challenge from the right in his re-election fight and campaigned, in part, on a promise to preserve the 17-year-old law that requires troops to keep their sexual orientation secret.

McCain blocked consideration of a defense bill in September that included a provision allowing repeal of "don't ask, don't tell," and in recent days he has been in negotiations with Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., chairman of the Armed Services Committee, on whether the "don't ask, don't tell" provision should be stripped from the bill entirely. If that occurs, the Democratic leadership could use other means to bring the measure to the floor, but they would be more time-consuming... Read entire article here.

Remembering Wilmington Riots- November 10, 1898

The Frederick Douglass Foundation is taking the time to commemorate the 112 year anniversary of the historical events that took place during the Wilmington Insurrection of 1898 better known as the Wilmington Race Riots.

On November 10, 1898 in Wilmington, NC - white supremacist Democrats illegally seized power from the elected Republican government in a violent coup d'état that left an un-estimated number of blacks dead. The group lead by Alfred Moore Waddell, consisted of white businessmen and former Confederate soldiers; all of whom were white supremacists that took unprecedented actions under the guise of re-establishing the Democratic Party.

"Subsequent to usurping power, Democratic state legislators passed the first Jim Crow laws for North Carolina. The Democrats had established martial law for African Americans in North Carolina and had thus forged a template applied far beyond the state's borders for at least fifty years. Many of the rights blacks had secured after the Civil War were removed from the legal codes."

The Wilmington Insurrection was the only instance of a municipal government being overthrown in US history and began the 66 year digression of black civil rights after the Republican established reconstruction era.

As we reflect on these solemn events that stain American history, we must remember the battles fought and won by individuals who stood for universal freedom and unapologetically demanded equal rights of all people.

Candidate Spotlight: Marie Ann Buerkle

We at the Frederick Douglass Foundation wish to garner the support of members towards the campaign of Congressional Candidate Ann Marie Buerkle, NY-25.

Ann Marie Buerkle, a member of FDF, is in a tight race for the 25th U.S. Congressional seat between incumbent Democrat Dan Maffei. It has been reported that a winner may not be determined for at least a week.

As of Friday preliminary results show Ann Marie, Buerkle has 99,583 votes to her opponents' 98,899. Her lead is now 684. However, those results do not include 11,645 absentee ballots with only a portion having been mailed back to all respective counties.

The Frederick Douglass Foundation congratulates both Tim Scott (SC-01) and Allen West (FL-22); two Black Republicans candidates who were successful in winning seats in Congress. As we are especially enthusiastic as this election made history with Florida electing its first Black Lieutenant Governor, Jennifer Carroll. Mrs. Carroll is one of only two Black females to ever hold the position in the nation.

Dean Nelson has been appointedVice President of Underserved Outreach to spearhead the organization's efforts to develop pregnancy centers in urban communities n ationwide. With decades of experience in ministry, grassroots mobilization, and equipping urban leaders, Rev. Nelson will focus on recruiting and equipping African American pastors to open pregnancy centers in urban areas. With the highest rate of abortions occurring among African American women and the majority of abortion providers clustered in urban neighborhoods, Nelson's work will focus on one of the most strategic projects in the pro-life movement today.

"Care Net is blessed to have Dean join our team. He has extensive national experience in mobilizing leaders in the African American community and a long track record of success in launching faith-based outreach programs," said Care Net President Melinda Delahoyde. Rev. Nelson is passionately committed to promoting a culture of life and developing leadership training opportunities for African Americans and other minorities. In his prior role as executive director of Network of Politically Active Christians (NPAC) and as vice-chairman for the Frederick Douglass Foundation (FDF), he helped to inform, teach, and train hundreds of faith leaders how to effectively communicate and defend life-affirming policies.

Rev. Nelson also has a broad background in ministry. He has served as the Executive Pastor for Wellington Boone Ministries in Atlanta, GA and is an ordained minister with the Fellowship of International Churches. He also has more than 15 years of experience in campus ministry, formerly serving as the National Director of Global Outreach Campus Ministries, a national ministry focused on spiritual revival on campuses across America. In addition, Dean has helped to plant churches with Wellington Boone Ministries in capital cities, such as Richmond, Virginia, Raleigh, North Carolina, and Atlanta, Georgia. The message from voters in the 2010 election was two-fold: a rejection of President Barack Obama's job-killing Socialist agenda and a denunciation of the Democratic Party's divisive politics of race-baiting. The accusation by Democrats that the Republican Party is a racist party was exposed, once again, to be absolutely false when these three black Republicans, shown below, won their elections and were added to the long list of black Republicans already serving in elected positions in multiple states at various levels of government. Newly elected to Congress are Tim Scott in South Carolina and Allen West in Florida. Also in Florida, Jennifer Carroll became that state's lieutenant governor, the first black woman Republican ever elected to this position. These victorious candidates received scant media coverage since they contradict the image promoted by Democrats that the Republican Party is racist.

During the election, Obama and his fellow Democrats tried to avoid the political tsunami by resorting to acts of desperation, including scraping the bottom of the Democratic Party's racist barrel. Blacks in Florida were startled and incensed when former President Bill Clinton, at the apparent behest of Obama, tried to get black Democrat U. S. Rep. Kendrick Meek to drop out of the race for U. S. Senate and endorse white Gov. Charlie Crist, the one-time Republican who ran as an independent after withdrawing from the Republican Party primary. There would have been a firestorm of charges of racism by the liberal media and black civil rights organizations, such as the NAACP, had a white Republican tried to force a black Democrat out of a race for any elected office.

So, what was a focus for the NAACP during the 2010 election? That once great organization was busily digging its own grave of irrelevancy by issuing a bogus and racially incendiary report written by far left wingers in the Institute for Research and Education on Human Rights. That report falsely accused the Tea Party activists of being racist because they oppose Obama's socialist agenda and want to reduce the size of our government, cut spending and keep our taxes low. Without a doubt, the NAACP report was a blatant attempt to get black voters to the polls by stirring up hatred against their fellow white Americans who Obama described as "the enemy."

Not surprising, the NAACP's report backfired and may well have been the final nail in the coffin of white guilt. In his Internet blog posting entitled "Why I Won't Be Reading the NAACP's Report on Tea Party Racism," pundit Roger Simon wrote the following analysis.

"[T]he NAACP has become a creator, not a fighter, of racism. They are in the racism business, fanning the flames in order to survive, and I won't be reading their shameful, phony propagandistic report on the supposed bigotry in the Tea Party movement just being issued today in time for the election. Life is too short. If it were centuries long, it would be too short.

"But am I attacking this report without reading it? Indeed I am. If Nancy Pelosi can shove through Congress sweeping health care legislation that changes the economy of our country without reading it, I certainly can attack some trivial report on my little Internet blog after only glancing at the first paragraph and the names of the authors.

"There is, however, a serious issue represented by this report. We have come to a moment in our national development when identity based organizations like the NAACP have a strong vested interest in impeding progress, especially for the groups they purport to represent. If things get better for black people, the NAACP has no reason for being - or must devolve into some kind of social club."

In Case You Missed It: Nearly 40 Black Republicans Vying for Office

There hasn't been a black Republican in Congress since J.C. Watts left office in 2003. But at least 38 black GOP candidates in 21 states are on ballots for the November general election, with several challenging incumbent black Democrats and others with high name recognition.

In Chicago's Second Congressional District, for example, Jesse Jackson Jr. won the seat in 2008 with 90 percent of the vote.

This time, he is being challenged by Isaac Hayes, a conservative black Republican who also has strong ties to the faith community. Today, Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele will be in Chicago to lend a hand to Hayes' campaign for the district, which includes the south side of Chicago. Hayes is also highlighting Jackson's troubles - revelation of an extramarital relationship and possible ties to former Gov. Rod Blagojevich - to bolster his image as the honest candidate.

Timothy Johnson, vice chairman of the North Carolina Republicans, says Hayes' race is just one example of the high visibility Republican candidates are carrying in the midterm election.

"Blacks do not all look alike. We do not all think alike. We do not all sound alike. We are just as diverse as the white community," Johnson told BlackAmericaWeb.com.

"We have options. We have always had options. With the caliber of people we have running for office this year, we can have quality representation on both sides of the aisle," said Johnson, who also leads the Frederick Douglass Foundation, a North Carolina-based organization that encourages alternative choices in policy and politics.

But Robert Smith, a political science professor at San Francisco State University, says he doubts there will be a large number of black Republicans elected this year to Congress.

"Sure, there is a large number, but how many of them are serious candidates?" Smith said, referring to the 38 people seeking House and Senate seats across the nation.

"I think the only black Republican who is sure to win is the gentleman in South Carolina, Tim Scott," Smith told BlackAmericaWeb.com.

Scott, Smith said, has something in common with other black Republicans who have been elected to Congress, like J.C. Watts. "He's running in a majority white district," he said.

Scott, who defeated the son of late longtime Sen. Strom Thurmond, faces Ben Frasier, a Democrat who also is black. Scott won the race for District One with 68 percent of the vote in a runoff. A Republican has represented that district for the last three decades.

"It's very difficult for black Republicans to get elected to Congress. Those who have been elected were in majority white districts that were conservative," Smith said.

"Blacks see conservatism and racism as one in the same. They see conservatism as hostile to their interest," he said.

Two black representatives currently involved in ethics investigations - Eddie Bernice Johnson of Dallas and Charlie Rangel of New York - have black Republican challengers.

Michel Faulkner, a Harlem minister who has worked with several faith-based initiatives, is challenging Rangel to represent the 15th District of New York.

"Republicans will have a difficult challenge, even when facing black representatives involved in scandals," Smith said. "If Adam Clayton Powell IV could not beat Charlie Rangel, I don't believe another candidate can do it this time," he said.

The same holds true for Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson, currently under fire for her handling of Congressional Black Caucus Foundation scholarship monies.

"In spite of the scandals, by the time you get to November, it's a party line vote," Smith said. "If these representatives were going to be unseated, it would have had to happen in the primaries."

Timothy Johnson says black Republican candidates will show their strength in November.

"I listen to 'The Tom Joyner Morning Show.' I listen to Michael Baisden. They don't give black Republicans a chance," Johnson said.

"We have more love for brothers in the Nation of Islam than we have for brothers in the Republican Party," said Johnson, who is a member of a fraternity and works at Shaw University, a private black college in Raleigh, North Carolina.

"It's not about voting for the best party. It's about voting for the best person for the job," Johnson said. "It's about choice, and that's what is being offered in this election."
